Save time for yourself, and you’ll be exponentially happier. Photo by Aron Visuals on Unsplash

Several years ago, I lived in a house that was not close to a lot of things. I bought the house because it was close to the school that I was going to teach forever. Two years later I was commuting 45 minutes or more into downtown Raleigh.

For three years, I spent most days driving about 120 miles/day. My commute to and from work was the ultimate time-suck. Without traffic, it was about a 35-minute drive on the highway. I was getting up and leaving by 6:15 am to avoid traffic backing up and increasing my commute.

Don’t let reduce() scare you!

I will start this post out by admitting that JavaScript reduce() was the most intimidating array method for me by far. I wanted to write this how-to guide to help you overcome any fears that you have of using this array method so you can start using it AND understand what you’re writing.

We have all written code we don’t quite understand! And that’s okay. I’m here to help!

JavaScript’s reduce() array method is a powerful and valuable tool. Where it becomes less desirable (for lack of a better term) is the fact that its syntax can be intimidating. …

Accountability for Weight Loss Check-In October 12, 2020

I’m back! I did not post last week because I was on vacation and I had no internet. And even if I did, I probably would not have. Ultimately, these posts are for me and a way to keep myself accountable.

How does one lose weight on vacation? I don’t think that is something you should necessarily focus on while on vacation. I think you should focus on the present. You should focus on having fun and relaxing. …

Last weekend I spent four wonderful days on a North Carolina mountain vacation. My two closest friends and I headed west to a town called Leicester in the North Carolina mountains, just 30 minutes outside of Asheville, North Carolina. As I’ve mentioned before, I have a love/hate relationship with fall in North Carolina, but the mountains in October are certainly one of the reasons I love it!

This was the first time I had seen my friends since February 2020, and the first people I had spent time with outside of my own family. …

It’s fall y’all! And for me, one of my favorite parts is about this season is Trader Joe’s fall items. It’s mainly food offerings, but I do have one non-food item on this list.

These are in no particular order, but they are only available for a limited time. I will also say unless you like the taste of apples and pumpkins, then this list may not be for you. It’s all about those fall scents, smells, and tastes.

Enjoy and hurry to your local Trader Joe’s before the season is over! …

It’s remarkably easy

The JavaScript array method includes(), like so many other array methods, does what its name proclaims: it will check an array to see if it includes a specific value. This array method is handy and incredibly easy to use!

What does includes() do?

The JavaScript array method includes() will check an array to see if it includes the specific value that you provided. This array method returns a boolean: true if the array includes the value or false if it does not.

How do I use includes?

array.includes(valueToSearchFor, fromIndex)

The syntax is fairly simple.

The first and required parameter you pass the array method is the value that you want to search for in the array. This value is case sensitive, and it is looking for an EXACT match. …

Accountability for Weight Loss Check-In September 28, 2020

Greetings from Oak Island, NC! My brother, his girlfriend, and I came down to see my parents for the weekend. It’s always a nice time, but it goes by really fast.

It is starting to feel like fall in North Carolina!

I do love this time of year, but at the same time, I hate to say “goodbye” to the summer. I love the summer and just sitting on the beach with a book. I could do it for HOURS.

Speaking of hours, I am already missing longer days. I used to be able to read on my patio at home until 8:45 pm at one point during the summer. …

Accountability for Weight Loss Check-In September 21, 2020

I have been reverse dieting for a few weeks now, and while I love eating more food it is really hard to watch my weight fluctuate all over the place.

From Giphy

I’ve thought about reducing the amount that I weigh myself, or not weighing myself at all for a few weeks, but that hasn’t always been the most successful solution for me. I tried this after I had knee surgery in early 2015 and the result was an additional 15 pounds. …

For loops used to be my everything. Not anymore

I don’t know about you, but when I started learning how to write JavaScript, forEach() was not on my radar. If I needed to iterate over an array, for loops were my everything.

When I was going through my coding bootcamp several years ago, we were not being taught JavaScript array methods. I’m not sure if coding bootcamps are now being more thoughtful in including them in the curriculum, but if not, then this article is for you!

What Does forEach() Do?

forEach() iterates over an array in a clean and succinct way. Unlike with its predecessor (for loop), you don’t have to indicate that the loop should run for the duration of the length of the array. …

Accountability Check-In: September 7, 2020

It has been a great, but exhausting week!

Last week was my first week at my new job, and waking up earlier to get things done. It’s amazing how different I feel waking up when the sun is shining versus when it’s still dark out! But- I did it!

I know some of you are probably rolling your eyes because you get up much earlier than 6 am, but I’ve spent the last several months getting up naturally with my dogs at about 7 am. It is WILD to me how much of a difference it makes. …
